Discover Anaheim: Disneyland, Baseball, and Oranges
Travel guide · editorialIn 1955, Walt Disney opened his first theme park on a former orange grove, turning a quiet farm town into a world-famous destination. When you plan a vacation in Anaheim today, Mickey Mouse is probably the first thing that comes to mind, but this Orange County city also offers professional sports, a charming historic downtown, and quick access to the beaches of Southern California.
German Roots and Orange Groves
Anaheim was founded in 1857 by German immigrants who wanted to grow wine here. The name combines the Santa Ana River with the German word "Heim" (home). A vine disease wiped out the vineyards, and citrus groves took their place, giving Orange County its name. A few buildings in the historic center recall this era, and the Mother Colony House is considered the oldest house in the city. After World War II, thanks to Disneyland, freeway construction, and the defense industry, Anaheim grew into a major city.
Things to See in Anaheim
The Disneyland Resort includes two parks: the classic Disneyland, with Sleeping Beauty Castle and Main Street, U.S.A., and Disney California Adventure, with Pixar and Marvel areas. Between them lies Downtown Disney, a strip of shops and restaurants. If you're staying several days, book tickets and reservation time slots in advance. Away from the parks, Anaheim shows a different side: the Los Angeles Angels play baseball at Angel Stadium, and the Anaheim Ducks play hockey at the Honda Center. The Anaheim Packing District, set in a restored orange-industry packing house, is now a popular food hall. Families also visit the Knott's Berry Farm amusement park in neighboring Buena Park.
Where to Eat and Go Out in Anaheim
Chain restaurants dominate around the parks, but things get more interesting a few miles away. The Packing House brings together stalls serving ramen, poke, tacos, and craft beer. West of the city, Little Arabia begins on Brookhurst Street, with Lebanese, Syrian, and Yemeni restaurants, making it one of the most exciting places to eat in Anaheim. In neighboring Garden Grove and Westminster, you'll find Little Saigon, one of the largest Vietnamese communities outside Vietnam. In the evening, the nightlife shifts to the breweries and bars around the Center Street Promenade.
Tips for Visiting the Disneyland Resort
If you want to experience Disneyland without overly long waits, visit on weekdays outside school vacations and arrive at park opening. The paid Lightning Lane system can shorten lines at popular attractions, and the official app shows current wait times. Hotels within walking distance of the entrance save you parking fees and time. In the evening, don't miss the fireworks over the castle, held on many nights, and the World of Color water show at Disney California Adventure. One day per park is the minimum; families with young children should plan on more time.
Getting Around Anaheim and the Best Time to Visit
The nearest airport is John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana, about 20 minutes away; Los Angeles International is roughly 30 miles northwest. ARTIC station connects the city with Metrolink commuter trains and the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner to Los Angeles and San Diego. Anaheim Resort Transportation shuttle buses run between hotels and the parks. The best times to visit are spring and fall, when the weather is mild and school vacations are over; the parks are especially crowded in summer and around Christmas. You can reach the beaches of Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, and Laguna Beach in 30 to 45 minutes.
