About Explora
Explora is a science center in Albuquerque, New Mexico, located near Old Town. The name comes from the Spanish verb "explorar," which means "to explore." The museum takes an interactive approach that brings science, math, and art to life through hands-on activity and inquiry-based learning. More than 250 interactive exhibits are spread across two floors with a total of 1,900 square meters (about 20,450 square feet) of exhibit space. Among other things, visitors can try out a laminar-flow sprinkler display, an experimentation area, an arts-and-crafts workshop, and a high-wire bicycle. The offerings are rounded out by a performance theater, a gift shop, and dedicated areas for educational programs.
The center's history began in the early 1980s, when two independent groups had similar ideas for an exploratorium—one for children, the other for science and technology. Explora was officially founded in 1984, and in 1986 the organization HealthQuest joined the consortium. With support from the City of Albuquerque and an approved tax measure in 1987, a permanent location could be established. After several moves and a merger with the Albuquerque Children's Museum in 1995, the center moved into its current home in December 2003. Explora is a member of the Association of Science-Technology Centers and has received numerous awards for its exhibits and programs, including the National Medal for Museum and Library Service.
