About Wasserturm

The Water Tower on Friedrichsplatz is probably Mannheim's best-known landmark. The 60-meter-high structure, 19 meters in diameter, was built between 1886 and 1889 and was designed by the architect Gustav Halmhuber, who won first prize in a nationwide competition. Originally, the tower served as the central storage point for the city's drinking water supply, keeping water pressure constant across the flat Rhine plain. After a newer tower was built on the Luzenberg in 1909, it lost its main function and served only as a reserve reservoir until 2000. Today the structure is a protected monument and a popular destination for visitors.

Architecturally, the tower combines elements of Roman monumental style with neo-Baroque touches and is considered part of the largest continuous Art Nouveau ensemble in Germany. The facade is clad in yellow sandstone, while the cone-shaped copper roof is crowned by a statue of Amphitrite about 3.50 meters tall. This figure, designed by Johannes Hoffart, sits enthroned above a small water basin adorned with bronze figures of mermaids and tritons. Stone centaurs can also be found at the large basin in the foreground. The entire complex, surrounded by a semicircular park, arcaded buildings, and a cascade, makes for an atmospheric sight after dark, with the tower and the fountains illuminated.

For visitors, Friedrichsplatz is an attractive meeting place in the warm season, and in winter it is brought to life by an annual Christmas market. The park lies about 2.50 meters lower than the surrounding Rondellstrasse and can be reached via four flights of open stairs. The historical significance of the site is underscored by its close ties to the city's history, since Mannheim, because of its location on the Rhine plain, struggled for a long time with problems supplying drinking water. The Water Tower thus stands not only for the technical innovation of its time but also for the city's urban development, as the city wanted to make an imposing statement with its construction.
