About Technoseum
The Technoseum in Mannheim, known until 2009 as the Landesmuseum für Technik und Arbeit (State Museum of Technology and Work), is a major technology museum that documents more than 200 years of technological and social history in southwestern Germany. Established as a public-law foundation jointly sponsored by the state of Baden-Württemberg and the city of Mannheim, the museum opened in 1990 after nearly five years of construction. Designed by Berlin architect Ingeborg Kuhler, the building is an urban landmark of the city and was recognized as an architectural and artistic monument in 2020. Its architecture, with slanted white planes and an exposed steel skeleton, creates a dynamic impression and reflects the concept of a working museum. Visitors experience the tour as a downward-winding space-time spiral that leads them through the various floors.
The permanent exhibition combines historical exhibits with interactive hands-on stations and daily demonstrations. The six main levels, connected by ramps, cover topics such as industrialization, the evolution of mobility, energy, and media. Highlights include a historic paper mill where visitors can make their own paper, a working weaving mill, and the Eschenau Museum Railway, a converted fireless steam locomotive that offers rides into the adjoining museum park. Outdoors, you can see additional historic locomotives and a field railway run by volunteers. The Elementa 1 to 3 exhibition areas offer experiment stations where you can explore scientific principles in a playful way, from 18th-century mechanics to technologies of the future.
In addition to its permanent collection, the museum regularly presents rotating special exhibitions, some of which have won international awards. The museum also sees itself as an important place for learning outside the classroom, working with schools and clubs through a broad educational program. Following a comprehensive renovation and renaming in 2010, the Technoseum plans further modernization by 2030, during which the permanent exhibition is to be restructured thematically. A special chapter in the museum's history is the Mannheim museum ship, a former paddle steamer that has been closed since 2018 but was taken over by an association that aims to restore it and revive it as an exhibition venue for inland navigation.
